Musée de Villeneuve

Archaeological and ethnological museum

Created in 1985 by the « les Amis de Villeneuve » with help from the town council, the museum houses the results of archaeological digs carried out on the site of la Roche Amère and shows remains from the Bronze age, of the Roman occupation and the medieval period to nowadays: knapped flints, terracotta, coins, various tools, etc.

Opening times:

  • Sunday 11 am – 12 except in July and August
  • Wednesday to Friday 3 – 6 pm in July and August

The Memory of Stones and the Memory of Mankind

Created by the inhabitants of Vachères in 1958 with help from the town council. Renovated, enriched and reinstalled in a modern museum layout with the help of the parc du Luberon, the museum’s theme is now stone, in its geological form or worked by man.

You can see fossils, flintstones taillées from the Largue valley, ancient remains.

Famous for its Bachitherium or « gazelle de Vachères » dating back thirty million years and a life-sized reproduction of the Guerrier de Vachères, a Gallo-Roman statue from Ist century B.C.

Musée de la mine à Saint-Maime

Musée de la mémoire ouvrière, Mines et Mineurs de Provence (Memory of the Mines, mining and miners)

A museum created in 1984 by the association l’Œuvre au Noir, with the help of the parc du Luberon.

The musée de la Mémoire ouvrière presents mining actvitiy through the stories of former miners, photographs and objects to understand the day-to-day lives, work, and the social organization of these workmen, who were often foreigners and who settled in this country and to whom this museum pays homage.

Musée de Reillanne

Musée des Amis des Arts

An ethnological museum created by the association les Amis de Reillanne with the help of the town council.

It houses a rich collection of craftsmen’s tools and of small professions such as shoemaker, tinsmith, baker, cabinet maker, carpenter, and hairdresser.

It also shows local pottery, and items of costume. A remarkable ethnographic collection.

Runby volunteers, the museum is currently undergoing inventory.

Opening times: open during exhibition days in July and August

La Maison d’histoire et de mémoire d’Ongles (House of historyLa Maison d’histoire et de mémoire d’Ongles (House of history and memory)

This is the story, through the exhibition « Ils arrivent demain… », of the first village built to host former harki families, from 1962 to 1971.

It is a homage to the harkis and their families, to lieutenant Durand who accompanied them and to the people of Ongles.

The Priory of Salagon, the departmental ethnological museum_15545710277_lMusée départemental ethnologique de Salagon (Departmental Ethnological Museum). Mane

Created in 1983 by the association Alpes de Lumièrethe Musée départemental ethnologique de Salagon is a listed historical monument.

Located in Mane, not far from Forcalquier, its vocation is to collect, study, preserve and present the uses, know-how and testimonials of the society of the people of Haute-Provence, from the last century to the present day.

Its ethnobotanical gardens tell us the story of the relationship between Man and his plant environment, like open-air books.

Open to visitors all year round this site which was already occupied as far back as the Gallo-Roman period is one of the most remarkable Medieval monuments in Haute Provence.

It is intended as a tool for discovering and understanding Haute-Provence.
